These come back on their own schedule, not mine, a pull toward the edge of the studio, and whatever's just beyond it. They are all the same instinct: painting the threshold itself, the place where inside stops and something else starts. Stay too safely inside and there's no painting, just a studio interior. Push too far into what's beyond it and I lose the thing that makes it a threshold at all, it just becomes a landscape. What I'm after is that edge itself, unresolved, returning every so often because I still haven't finished with it.
