These start with a child's drawing, a bird, a fox, an idea, drawn before anyone's told them what it's supposed to look like. Picasso spent a lifetime trying to get back to that. For me it's permission as much as anything: the child's mark sets me free to take it further, to play, to let my own imagination loose on what they started. The real work is the balance, how far I let the embellishment run before the freedom I began with gets buried under it. Push too hard and it disappears under my own invention. Don't push at all and it's just a copy, not a painting. What I'm after is the middle of that journey, where the child's purity and my imagination are both still there, still in play. Every painting here began with a drawing by one of my children, you'll find the original alongside the finished piece.
