A small selection from an ongoing set of studies behind Beyond the Studio, shown here from first drawing through to finished painting. Many more exist beyond what's shown here, and some were painted over and carried on into something else entirely. The threshold between the studio and the garden, where the interior gives way to the exterior, is a pull I keep returning to, an investigation rather than something I've resolved. Too much studio and the outside disappears; too much garden and the room goes with it. Through that investigation, some pieces resolved into finished paintings, and some resolved as studies in their own right. What's here is part of that process, not a tidied up version of it.
